Problem with my dog, aggression towards other dogs and strangers.?

I have a lab mix who is around 6 months old. He is really friendly to my family and my other dog a chihuahua mix, but when i took him to the park one day he tends to act weird with other dogs, when a dog off leash comes up to him, his tail goes tucks in and he looks real nervous, then when the other dog turns away to leave he tried to snap an nip the other dog. Also when he sees a stranger he will growl, sometimes even bark.
I think he might have fear aggression issues,
I just do not know what to do, should I take him to a trainer?

You have a handsome puppy! Very cute pictures! You’re right; your lab mix has fear aggression.

Now, you need to understand that when a dog has fear aggression, he will never be able to completely get along with everyone. That’s ok though!! People usually tend to think that if your dog isn’t friendly or social, that there is automatically no hope which is NOT true!! You can’t completely cure a fearful dog, (they will never completely get over their fear, you can’t “cure it”) but you can control the dog’s fear and manage it so the dog can live a happy life with the right owner. And that right owner is you!

Before I go any further, do you take your lab mix to dog parks? If so, then you might need to stop. Dog parks spell TROUBLE for me and even more so for a dog that has fear aggression. Dog parks seem like a great idea, but there not really. Dog parks aren’t very safe (dogs not really supervised, some can be out of control, too much rough housing and play fighting etc.) and you can easily be accused of your dog hurting another dog out of fear. Your lab mix may come back to you when you call him, but what if he doesn’t one day? What if he is so scared he feels like he needs to fight with another dog for his life? You can’t take that risk. You can still take your lab on long walks and he can still enjoy the outdoors like in your backyard, but don’t take him to dog parks. You’re not depriving your dog of socialization, he will get socialized on walks and when you take him to a certified animal behaviorist.

You need to take your lab mix to a dog trainer. Not just any dog trainer, you need to take him to a certified animal behaviorist. Unlike regular dog trainers/obedience instructors, animal behaviorists know more about dogs with special needs.

If you go to a regular dog training class, you’re taking the risk that the trainer doesn’t know how to deal with more than the basic/intermediate training. My dog was a rescue and when we took her to regular training class, the instructor didn’t have a clue on how to help her not be scared of everybody and everything.

Your dog is taking an aggressive/anxious, submissive stance (whichever one he’s doing) to other dogs and people out of fear because he wants to scare them away because HE is scared that they might hurt him. When I took my dog to an animal behaviorist (not a veterinary behaviorist there is a difference) she learned that the world isn’t as much as a big scary place that it used to be. My dog is still scared, (when a dog is fearful they will never completely get over their fear, you can’t “cure it”) but she isn’t as scared as she used to be!!

You will be meeting “neutral dogs” and “neutral people” when you find a certified dog trainer/ animal behaviorist at their training center. A neutral dog means that nothing really bothers a particular dog, so if they see a dog that is terrified, it isn’t going to bother them at all. It’s the same with people. The staff that works with an animal behaviorist SHOULD be fine with dogs that are scared and they shouldn’t freak out. This is called desensitization. When you go to a trainer, you will slowly start desensitizing your lab mix to people and other dogs.

All dog trainers/ animal behaviorist do things a little differently. But for the most, part, they should be on the same page.

I will give you the website of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. You can find a certified Animal Behaviorist near you, at their website.

When you find one, go to their training center see if you’re comfortable with the trainer and staff. Go with your instinct. If something doesn’t feel right to you, then there is probably something wrong. Make sure that whatever trainer you go to, that they ONLY use the positive reinforcement approach to training.

Remember, patience is key! It’s going to take some time for your lab mix’s fear aggression to get better.
