What are the cartridges for?
What do they do?
Do i have to buy them?

The cartridges are the different types of pictures and fonts that you can cut out with the cricut machine. All the cartridges have a different theme. There are all sorts of alphabets and pictures for things like weddings, Christmas, birthdays, etc. You will have to purchase the cartridges, because they tell the cricut what to cut, and without them you just have a big paperweight. You don't need any special paper. You can use just regular cardstock, scrapbook paper, or even white printer paper if you'd like. You just cut it down to the size of your cricuts cutting mat, or smaller if you're cutting a smaller image, and stick it on. The mat is sticky to hold the paper in place, but it don't hurt the paper or anything. You plug in the cartridge and place the keyboard mat that comes with the cartridge on the keys. You feed in the cutting mat with your paper on it and key in what you'd like to cut and the cricut goes to work on it's cutting magic. It's really a lot of fun and there are so many uses for it. I highly recommend it.
