palm trunk damage at base by trimmer?
Use of trimmer around my palm tree has made the bottom of trunk to turn out and up. Tree is healthy except looks weird. What can I do? Trim off bark skirt and wrap bottom of trunk?
Plam trees need care paying attention to their trunks, as they can't self-repair, though I think your question relates more to how to improve its looks, and how to treat it. Palms trunks have many vertical cells within them that carry water and nutrients upwards, so need to be as best preserved as possible. If you remove some of the protective skirt then you risk exposing your palm to more potential damage, so I'd resist this.
You could use a stake for a couple of years to keep the palm growing more vertically from now onwards - as long as this is not more of an eye-sore.
I'd probably plant some more tropical effect plants near to your palm, though be careful that they don't compete too much for water with it. There are many smaller palm trees, and I'm assuming here that yours is a larger grower - I don't know your location, so an appropriately hardy palm is important. One option would be to plant a dwarfer palm nearby, potentially one that bushes, rather than forms a solitary trunk. The dwarf Pygmy Date Palm, Phoenix Roebelenii is often sold as multi-trunked, and grows to around 12' in height - (not fully hardy in the UK though! ) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/51223/ Otherwise the European Fan Palm is typically clumping too - http://www.vandea.com/garden/macon_chamaerops_humilis003.jpg The dwarf Sabal Palmetto Sabal minor, is low growing too - http://www.seedman.com/image/z2003.jpg This is hardy in the UK, and I have grown many outdoors in central England over the last 10 years.
Overall, this is partly going to depend on the type of palm that you're currently growing (size etc), as well as your location. If possible keep the lawn away from its trunk too, so that it doesn't get any further damage.
