save the date card vs wedding invitations?

are save the date cards the same as a wedding invitation? or do they get sent along with a wedding invite?

They're not the same thing, save the date cards are sent out well in advance of wedding invites (6+ mos before the wedding). They're not necessary, but are a courtesy if you have alot of guests who don't live near where you're getting married (like if you live far away from your families, and are getting married where you live, or if you have hometowns not near each other and are getting married in one of your hometowns, or are having a destination wedding). They don't include many details, just usually the city and date of your wedding, so your guests can begin planning for hotels and travel arrangements. They can be very casual.

Wedding invites, however, are usually very formal, contain all the details (date, time, location, formality level, etc), and are sent out 4-8 weeks before the wedding.
