New fish tank filter, please help!?

Its the AquaOne AR-85O, tank & stand.
I have a very fine, 1mm gravel. 1 1/2 - 2 inches deep.
Also a 15OW heater, an air pump and long stone.

Questions:

The filter in the hood has 2 filtering compartments, each with 3 layers.
The first bottom layer is small white tube-like things called ceramic noodles.
The secong layer, in the middle, is sponge.
The top layer is a carbon cartridge.
What do each of these do?

The ceramics will be home to your beneficial bacteria, once your tank has completed the nitrogen cycle. The sponge catches tank detritus like bits of dead plant and debris, it should be rinsed in OLD tank water at weekly partial water changes, depending on your stocking, you can get away with only doing this once a month unless you've got grubby fish!

The carbon acts to remove things like medications from the water. In all truth it only really stays active for around 2 weeks or so, after that its "dead" and pretty much just acts the same as a sponge. Most experienced fishkeepers, myself included, just plain don't use carbon. A healthy fish tank shouldn't need it!
