how much snow can this roof hold if i build it as detailed below ?
the roof will be 16' from the peak to the gutters and 24 feet long,, so coming 8' down from the peak the 2x4 rafters on 12" centers will rest on a dbl 2x4 header 24' long,, the header will be on 4x4s 12' tall and be on 4' spacing for the whole 24' length,, than another 8' to the next dbl 2x4 header 24' long on top of 4x4s 4' spacing,, i would like to use 2x4 rafters on 12" centers because my back and sholder cant handel 2x6s on 16s,, the roof will be covered with plywood and shingles,, i dont think i have an open span greater than 8' anywhere other than a garage door,, there are 3 garage doors on one end is an 8' tall,, in the middle is a 12' tall and the other end is an 8' i want it strong so extra wood is not a prob ,,trying to move heavy timbers is,,,, it is assumed i only described one side of the building
Sounds like you are building it
strong enough to hold up the
mountain, not just the snow.
You don't need 16's when your
building it as tight as you are,
twelve's will be fine. If it is
worrying you raise the center.
Just a couple of feet makes a
big difference. I took mine to 14.
Not for the snow, but for the storage.
