Need a little help about making cupcakes?

I'm going to make cupcakes tomorrow since I already made sugar cookies tonite. I was going to put cake frosting on the cupcakes AND decorative sugar crystals ( red and green: christmas colors) but my mom doesn't want me to give my cousin too much sugar and sweets ( ages 5 and 12). I made the sugar cookies and didn't put anything else on them because I tasted them and they were definitely sweet enough. Should I make some plain cupcakes, some cupcakes with just icing and some cupcakes only with sugar crystals to be fair?

Just put a thin layer of icing on the cup cakes. It doesn't need to be piled on top. And sprinkle lightly with the colored sugar.
