How long should someone keep a greeting card?

What I'm looking for is what the etiquette is for holding onto a greeting card before manners allow for it to become refuse? I suppose that it could vary with the type of card, the occasion, the giver, etc., and everyone is likely to have their own opinion (which is a good thing). I would appreciate answers that cover most instances. Thanks in advance.
Great answers from everyone. Difficult to choose among them, so this will be going to a vote.

I am a bit of a packrat so I usually keep all of mine (except the ones from very casual acquaintances or the ones businesses sent out at Christmas). But a rule I think works well for those who like to clear space more often is a year, when the same occasion comes around again toss out the old ones to make room for the next. Of course this only works for annual events like Christmas and birthdays, I guess for weddings and such it's really up to you...
