How do I know which note in a chord in a chorale is the non-harmonic tone?
I've analyzed the piece and stacked the notes into the closest thing I can get them to root position. I know there are non-harmonic tones when there is a fourth note that just doesn't belong. But how can you tell which note in the chord is the odd-man-out?
Chords are always spelled in thirds from the bottom up in root position: CEG, DFA, EGB, FAC, GBD, ACE, or BDF.
Even with sharps and flats the chords are still spelled like these seven examples. (If there is a chord with a seventh degree that "belongs", it will always be a third above the last note listed above; for example, CEGB, DFAC, etc.)
Nonharmonic tones include everything in your chord that is not one of those three notes notes, as you said
