How to use the infinite sum formula?
It's summer time and I'm trying to remember everything I learned in the beginning of pre-calc. One of the things slipping my memory is the implementation of the infinite sum formula.
Could anybody work me through an example using the terms 25,5,1,0.2...
The sum of an infinite geometric series (S) in terms of the first term of the series (a) and its common ratio (r) is given by:
S = a/(1 - r).
In this case, we see that the first term is 25 and the common ratio is 1/5 (as each term is the previous multiplied by 1/5). Therefore, the sum of the series is:
25 + 5 + 1 + 0.2 + ... = 25/(1 - 1/5) = 25/(4/5) = 125/4.
