From 2004 to the present have been the best holidays for me, because those are the ones my son has been alive to see. When he was 4 months old, he rolled under the Christmas tree a few days before Christmas in one of those "I just turned around for a minute" moments. Before I could stop him, he had pulled the loose tissue paper off of his plush "first football," and happily began chewing on it. That's something my husband and I still laugh about to this day. But the best year of all was last year. It was the first year my son really understood Christmas - both the Santa part and the story of baby Jesus part. While he didn't want to get too close to Santa, he was so excited about leaving milk and cookies for him, and had the biggest eyes when he saw the presents that Santa had left him. He also loved playing with the nativity set we gave him a few weeks before Christmas, and loved to reenact the first Christmas.
But the greatest gift I received last year, or any other year for that matter, was that my family and I "adopted" a little boy my son's age through the Adopt an Angel program for Christmas. We bought each and every present he received that year; if it hadn't been for us, he wouldn't have gotten anything. We did go a bit overboard, but we really wanted to give him a nice holiday. Knowing that he awoke to the same wonder and magic that every little one deserves on Christmas because of us was the unbelievably heartwarming.
