What style of recording gives you the best quality on Video Cameras? Memory stick, tape, dvd, other?

I am looking into getting a camera and I would like to recieve good quality picture and sound.

The answer really depends on what format the video is in when the camera records it.

Most current tape video cameras record their video in DV format. The DV format uses the DCT (Discrete cosine transform) compression format.

DVD recorder cameras that record direct to DVD's directly convert their raw video to MPEG-2. The problem is that this higher compressed video is a "lossy" format and that in the compression phase, some information is lost. This means that if you wanted to pull video and incorporate it in a edited production, and record it to DVD again, the video would suffer more degradation. I'm unaware of DVD cameras having the ability to record native DV or uncompressed video to DVD medium. This in itself poses some issues since the smaller camera DVD's don't hold as much info and going to another format that is less compressed means you would have bigger data rates and less time for the same size disk. DVD cameras are great for "once-shot, Never-edited" users. Consumer/home videos are rarely ever shot to the extent that they don't need some editing given their notorious garish colors and lighting, jerky motion, poor audio and overall composition.

I'm not certain on what format the memory sticks record with. I'm taking a chance and guessing MPEG-2 as it's fairly efficient. Given that most memory sticks are in the low gigabytes range, It would have to be fairly compressed to fit say 30-45 minutes of video at 30 frames per second on 2 gigabytes. Given what corners the manufactures cut to keep the price of consumer cameras at, I would bet this is the case.

I'd stay with Mini-DV tape at a minimum. While it is a glorified consumer format, it is at least acknowledged as having some merit in the professional video world. It also means little compression and loss of quality when transferring it to a editing station or post production or DVD authoring.

I'll mention analog just for the sake of mentioning it. Most consumer analog cameras are old news. They lack many functions and features to adequately deal with the perverse nature of NTSC video and poor conditions in which they are usually used. Granted profesional analog video formats (Betacam SP and a few others(not to be confused with the consumer dead Betamax format)) still rival modern consumer digital formats in quality and the industry is still using them although HDTV will make them difficult to use. Suffice it to say, analog is still out there and once it's digitized, you can work with it just like the digital formats.
