Using Adobe Photoshop 5.0, how do you extract a picture of a dog from a photo to put it on a plain background?
I'm trying to extract a picture of my kid's dog, so I can put it on a plain background. I'm going to have it mounted for his dorm room. I have a good picture of the dog in the yard, but need to delete the grass. Thanks!
You'll need to learn a little about using one of several selection tools:
In this case - not having seen the actual picture - I'm guessing that the Polygonal Lasso tool will work best. You use it by clicking continuously around the image you want to select.
It's kinda like click/drag/click/drag all the way around the dog.
When you complete the selection and connect the last click to the first, the selection lines will begin "crawling" which means the selection is closed.
Now, under Edit, choose Copy. Then, under File choose New. the software assumes you want a new doc that's the right size for what you've copied. So when it's open just choose Edit>Paste.
Zip! Pop! the dog is now on a blank background ... right?
Since there will probably be small areas around the dog that you copied without meaning to, simply zoom in real close and use the Eraser tool to remove them. You'll probably need to adjust the size and edge softness of the Eraser. These adjustments are at the top of the menu bar when you select that tool.
By the way, if you want the background to be larger, you can always choose a different specific size before you paste the picture onto it.
Hope this helps. It just takes a little practice.
