My research paper is 2 pages too short, will this cause me to fail?
My professor marks really hard in this class and so I try to get everything perfect, but she seems to think everything it just 'all wrong'! This paper is to be 20-25 pages long and I have 20 including the title page and the bibliography, not 20 of the text itself.
I have put as many 'fillers' as I can into the paper without it being obvious. How much can she dock me for this?
Being just two pages under on a 20-page paper will not cause you to fail. You may or may not lose points for it being a little short. If she's a real stickler for page length, 10% short might merit a 10% deduction, although I wouldn't expect even that based on page length alone. Most professors are not that hard and fast about page limits unless being too short means that it doesn't treat the question as rigorously as it should. In giving page requirements (or guidelines), the idea is to show the depth they want to see. A 25-page paper that is repetitive and poorly organized and full of unnecessary block quotes will be judged worse than an 18-page paper with a very tight, well presented argument.
Careful with empty fillers--it might be more obvious than you think. Professors do notice how content-dense your paper is.
Read back over it and make sure everything flows well. One place you might be able to add something useful that's not just "filler" and won't require more research is transitions between paragraphs and parts if you haven't already "filled" them out. Sometimes it's easy to forget these while writing, especially if you're jumping around as you write, but they can make a big difference in how well your paper is understood and received. Of course, there is such a thing as too much.
