Why do people think Im English and Posh?
Since i've been little people have always assumed that I was really posh mainly down to my pronunciations with words like down, cow, shower etc. People don't just decide that im posh they also think im English which makes me laugh as their impressions make me sound like someone out of EastEnders which contradicts their posh theory. I live in Northern Ireland were I have came to the conclusion that 'w' is never heard in a word. Anyway the point is I don't have an English parent, my mum was born in Africa my Dad in Belfast but they just have a neutral accent which isn't as strong as mine or my brothers. Why do I speak with what people describe as a Posh/English accent? could it be the influence of telly?
Accents of Northern Ireland are strong and powerful and very easily identified and always on TV and the Radio - even here in dear old London.
Because your own accent is possibly less pronounced than is the case with others in your locality, thus it's easy for folk to remark on your lack of local accent and even to think that you have an accent from a far off place.
I'll let you into a little secret - the posher you sound the better your life will be and I'm not making this up. There are plenty of folk from all over UK who have learnt that it helps when it comes to getting that all important job, that to have a nice accent is one big key to the door.
G'luck. . .
Here are two English accents - one Northern the other Cockney
