How long does it take for a sprained ankle to heal?

I fell on my ankle this past Thursday (June 4th) and have been unable to walk on it since. The swelling is still incredible, and I have no movement in the lower half of my foot. I went to the hospital finally last night, because it was bothering me so much. I do not have any broken bones, just a severe sprain. The doctor told me to expect to be on crutches for some time, possibly retiring to a cane after a while. How long can I expect my foot to be like this?

I've had severe sprains where the doctor told me to stay on crutches for 3 weeks. I ditched them after 4-5 days. As a result, I permanently damaged my left ankle. Keep resting it as much as possible, elevating it above the level of your heart, put ice on it for 20 minutes every hour, and wrap it in an ace bandage for compression and support. It will probably take a couple weeks, but it's better than pushing your luck & getting a permanent injury.
