Legally, should there be a vet on site at organised horse events?
I recently took my beloved horse to an organised 12mile endurance ride, after just setting off the horse infront of him kicked out, breaking my horses leg.... The horse infront was not wearing a red ribbon but the rider assured me she had never kicked before.
My horse was bleeding severely & in a huge deal of pain. The organiser rang her own vet he got there as quickly as possible but took about an hour, the whole time my horse was v distressed & during the last 15mins was writhing & lurching about in pain. It took no less than 4 grown men to hold him. (he was a 17hh tb) It was incredibly distressing.
Whilst Im extremely grateful for the support from the organisers I wonder at such an event with over 70 riders, should they have had a vet on site? They did have paramedics.
My horse was put to sleep on arrival of the vet & is now resting in peace.. never to be forgotten)
There is no law which requires veterinary attendance at ANY event, anywhere in the world.
However, certain equestrian societies stipulate that there should be a vet in attendance at their competitions. You need to re-read your schedule to see if that particular event required a vet to be there.
It is YOUR responsibility to ensure your horse will be covered when competing, ie; you should have checked before entering that the facillities offered were adequate, including the option of vet assistance on site.
