What kind of license is necessary to drive a school bus?
I'm buying a school bus, but only to use as a personal vehicle. I am not driving it for a job, I am not picking up passengers, so in no way is it going to be used for commercial use. Me and my friends will be the only ones to ride in it. So does it count as a normal car or do I need a special license?
Also, I live in IL if that helps
In Illinois we go by two main classifications of
drivers licenses. Personal, and CDL. A CDL
license is needed IF you are driving it for a
commercial purpose for hire. The personal
license is solely for private use. A farmer,
for example, might be hauling his equipment
on a semi-tractor trailer combination, but he
is not hauling for hire. He does not need a CDL.
What he does need is his personal license
to be rated for the gross weight being hauled.
We have different classes of licenses for this
purpose without being a CDL license.
Depending upon the gross weight of your
bus, you would most likely need either a
class B or C license. But, not a CDL.
However, you must remember that all truck
classes in Illinois are rated in gross weight
for the license, which includes everything
being carried at any given time. You must
have the class of license that will cover you
with all the weight you would possibly carry.
That is a total of passengers, and cargo,
including the driver. Total weight! One too
many passengers, or one box, or suitcase
more that puts you over the weight class
of the license can cost you dearly. Both,
your license plates, and your drivers
license must cover the maximum weight
limit you have on the vehicle. Most of the
time you will never have to be weighed
at scales, but it can happen. If you are
overweight for the plate type, the fine is
steep. If you are caught driver outside
the class of your license, not only will
the fine be bad, but you could also
lose your license.
School buses have been used as
recreational vehicles, and camper
homes for many years in Illinois. They
can be the poor mans motor home.
Expensive to drive, but not too bad
for insurance for the occasional use,
and definitely with possibilities.
