Can sniffer dogs smell ecstasy?

... or is it only smelly drugs like cannabis and heroin that they can spot.

MDMA (or E) is actually a difficult drug for drug dogs to detect, but the volatiles that may remain after manufacture are not difficult. By training a dog to alert to specific volatiles at low levels your also picking up possible explosive manufacturing residues as well.

Drug smells are not in the natural prey drive 'sensory' zones a dogs nose is adapted to. Because they are trained by reward 'rote' learning... they really cannot tell if someone only sat somewhere where someone rolled a joint weeks before or your carrying... volatiles likewise. Dogs are more about prevention by visibility.

LSD however can be produced very pure and with near zero signature most dog detections will be for 'other' drugs associated with it. ie: residual cannabis odor from handling the packaging or proximity, ie clothing unrelated to the LSD itself.

Customs canines are effective in being intimidatory (handlers see signs of fear and thus give sometimes unintended cues to dog to alert). Sometimes dogs are used as the perfect foil to ensure that an officers suspicion can be acted on with impunity...

Thousands of street and licensed venues and premises canine alerts [they are really unwarranted searches] in Australia produced about 95% false positives. They were no better than random selection (where they are likely to get only low level consumers anyway). The Police still justified the programme "because it sends a zero tolerance message". This is a very unwise public practice as it elevates public mistrust in law and order.

Dog that are trained for explosives detection should be specialized. Cadaver dogs are another such case. [Whereas] Rescue dogs need to be adaptive learners and highly motivated. The nose is just one skill of many.

Drug dogs are selected for cuteness... curly coated retrievers, beagles etc.. detection [alert] is indicated by sitting passively.

There is no optimal 'doggy' solution, but some dogs are just so smart they could do both.... but a dog that smart deserves a stimulating life as mans best friend. I have such a dog.
