Today is the last day for the MA legislature to vote on a SSM override approved by a 2003 court decision.?

The opponents to SSM have been pitching a fit ever since. Twice an ammendment proposal to the states constitution defining marriage as being between and man and a woman has gone before the legislature and they have refused to vote on it. If it dies today without a vote it dies for good. Never before has any group tried harder to make civil rights a ballot issue, and this beligerent act has the support of Mitt Romney, future Presidential candidate.

We will get everything, it is just matter of time, and . . . a smarter president.

The Full Faith & Credit Clause probably will not be brought up until someone demands a right that is honored in one state, be honored in another state. This will probably happen quickly, but the route through the courts could take years, and that's only if a lower court doesn't dismiss the case.

Even the Supreme Court can decline to hear a case. But eventually, after enough similar petitions, the U.S. Supreme Court is going to find before itself a case where it has to decide upon the Constitutionality of the Defence of Marriage Act.

At this point, we will probably see the court make a major decision. That's why having a Democratic Presdient in 2008 becomes so important, since only the White can appoint new Supreme Court judges.

SSM, along with Equal status, has practical as well as symbolic meaning. When blacks were finally allowed to marry whites by court order, black familes started to become more equal.

Gays must have marriage in America, if they are ever to achieve equality. But how to get there is debatable.

In Britain Blair pushed through a partners bill, and now gays have equal national rights there. The only catch; just don't call it 'marriage.' But in a few years the Brits will probably say that the silly clause about marriage is silly and dump it.

Having the 1000s of federal rights that come with marriage are more important than the name we call it. The problem in the U.S. is, if you don't call it 'marriage' then you can't challenge federal marriage laws on points of 'equal treatment under the law.'
