What kind of rear end gears do I have?
Have an '83 camaro Z28 with a gm 7.5" rear end. Long story short, couldnt find the stamp on the outside of the axle with the gear code, so me and my Dad turned one of the rear wheels one complete rotation around and the driveshaft made ~3.25 rotations. I have read that the '83 camaro Z28's with CFI come with either a 2.93 or 3.23 rear end, and I highly doubt the rear end has ever been opened or rebuilt. Does this mean that I have 3.23's or is the way we tried to calculate the rear end gears completely wrong? Thanks in advance.
their is no accurate way of calculating gear ratio's by turning the tires because every 32nd of an inch rotated moves the ratio up or down and with wear in the gears there is no possible accurate way to make the calculation. the axle ratio is located on the front of the right axle tube or on the RPO sticker (white decal with a bunch of codes) located on the spare tire compartment or glove box. the axle ratio code will begin with the letter G if you want you can e-mail this code back to me and I will tell you whats hiding behind the diff cover....hillybillyinabottle@yahoo.com
