Why don't organizers of Chicago Marathon make the finishing tape longer?
Men's winner Ivuti and runner up Gharib were sprinting down the street trying to break a tape about five feet long. If it were say, 15 feet long, it would be much safer because they would be out of each other's way as they kicked it in. Women's race was goofy too, but Pirtea assumed she'd won, not realizing Adera was on the outside running by her.
the tape is only used for a symbolic finish line. Only the winners use the tape. The organizers could make the tape much longer and the chute wider.
Normally a marathon is not going to come down to a sprint.
May be they will do it differently next time.
