How do you get free health care under the Health Care Reform?

Okay so my mom canceled her insurance a few weeks ago and I'm starting to wonder what ever happened to Obama's health care reform?

Most of the healthcare reform act don't kick in until 2014, but there are plenty of options available now. For example, the government still offers medicare/medicaid, and many state/local governments offer some kind of health insurance assistance. Contact Health & Human Services in your area to find out what's available. You will likely need to have a meeting with someone there to determine what's available for you, and you will have to answer a number of questions about your mother's income. Do not be dissuaded by this. It's just a formality, because the U.S. does not recognize health care as a -universal- right. That means someone at H&HS has to look at your mother and see if she qualifies for insurance. This has been the system for the last 70-80 years. If your mothers income is too high, she will be denied coverage. This is the problem with the state of insurance in the United States right now. If you are desperately poor, you will likely have coverage. If you are wealthy, you can buy your own coverage. However, if you are in-between, you're probably screwed.

Either way, make the appointment and go to the meeting. It's better to take the chance in a five minute meeting than taking the chance of going without coverage. Plus your state probably has other benefits available that you didn't even know you could qualify for. These programs include rent assistance, utility assistance, food assistance, prescription assistance, etc.

There is also the possibility that some insurance charity can help her. For example, the hospitals in my area are run by a Catholic ministry. They offer 90% discounts to the poor. Again, you will have to prove your income.

If all that fails, ask the people at H&HS to help you contact Medicare/Medicaid - stick with whatever you get until at least 2014, when the lion's share of the bill kicks in.
