Identify Raspberry Bush 6-8 feet tall. Red and Purple Berries.?
When I was a kid in Pittsburgh, pa we had a large wild raspberry bush growing out of the edge of the forested area by our electrical substation. It was about 5 feet wide and about 6 feet tall at its highest point. Its vines were very rigid and brittle like a tree. The berries it produced were red that ripened to black, tart and not at all like the raspberries and blackberries they sell in the grocery stores.
I keep looking at raspberries and blackberry canes at the gardening store, but they all say that they need trellising to aid in support on the packaging. The thing that we had as a kid stood tall on its own and its stems were brittle and hard, which makes me think that what they're selling is not what I had.
Could somebody recommend a few berry varieties that would mimic the one I had as a child? The original plant no longer exists. I believe that I'm in region 5 or 6.

Raspberries can be red/yellow or purple/black varieties. The red/yellow run and should be planted on a trellis or other sort of setup. The black/purple types are planted and won't run; they're called bush raspberries. Cut the canes back to 5 or 6 inches long. Plants do not spread (hence sound like the type you saw as a kid). If planting more than one plant leave 6 to 8 feet between plants.
there are different varieties of raspberries, just like grapes, blackberries, etc. you only need be concerned with getting a bush type of raspberry plant. Whatever variety or hybrid the nursery is selling would be a personal preference..Ask the employees about the differeneces between two or more bush types.
