at stp calculate the mass of zinc and magnesium contained in the sample?
A metal strip containing a mixture of alloy of magnesium and zinc were dissolved in HCl according to procedure of this experiment. The sample has a mass of 0.100g and produces 63.79ml of hydrogen at STP, calculate the mass of zinc and magnesium contained in the sample.
X+Y = 0.100g
Let UNITs guide you; always USE THEM in your calculation to prevent errors
Firstly, the eqn:z xMg + yZn + zHCl -----> (x+y)H2 + xMgCl2 + yZnCL2
moles H2 = 0.06379 liters/22.4liters/mole = ?? moles H2
0.100 g/moles H2 = "MW" of strip in g/mole = ?? g/mole
"MW" g/mole = fMg * atwt Mg g/mole + (1-f) * atwt Zn g/mole
Plug and SOLVE for "f"
g Mg = f * 0.100g = ??
g Zn = (1-f) * 0.100g = ??
Plug and SOLVE
Basic mathematics is a prerequisite to chemistry – I just try to help you with the methodology of solving the problem.
